American Indian Boarding Schools & Missions: 1634-2021 - a.k.a.: Indian ...
From aged 18 months I grew up in Minto, and actually graduated Grade One at the Minto Elementary School, in The Bridge River Valley on the Land of the Xwisten/ Bridge River Indian Band within the St’át’imc Nation
In the spring we played with a St’át’imc Nation boy as his family was moving down from the upper Bridge River Valley.
This is a video
for "American Indian Boarding Schools". There are also
videos in this channel for more Canadian Residential Schools.. and
for many North & South American Tribes & First Nations,
Chiefs, Elders, Historical Events, Quotes, Indigenous Concerns,
Environmental Youth Activists.. .and much more.
------------------------------------------------ Although there has
been much focus, recently, on Canadian Residential Schools, following
the horrific news, of the finding of 215 bodies of Indigenous
children, in Kamloops B.C.,there was (and still is, in some
locations) a disgusting, American counter-part to the shameful
history, on Turtle Island. "Indifan American Boarding Schools",
(also known as: "Indian Residential Schools") were
established in the United States during the early 19th and mid 20th
centuries, with a primary objective of: "civilizing" or,
"assimilating" Indigenous American children and youth into
Euro-American culture. In the process, these schools denigrated
Indigenous American culture and made the children give up their
language, customs and religion. These boarding schools were first
established by Christian missionaries of various denominations, who
often started both missions and schools on the numerous tribe
reservations, especially, in the lightly populated areas of the West.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the government paid
religious orders to provide basic education to Indigenous children on
reservations. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) later founded
additional boarding schools based on the "assimilation model",
usually located off reservations and which sometimes drew children
from a variety of tribes. Some off reservation schools, such as St.
Joseph's Indian School in South Dakota, "continue to operate".
From 1879, to the present day, it is estimated that "hundreds of
thousands" of Indigenous Americans, as children attended Indian
boarding schools, although, the first missions and schools date back
to the mid-1600's. There were over 350 schools and 64 still remain
open, today. ------------------------------------------------- I
